Seminar Objectives
Participants will:
o Address pros & cons of having a dementia unit
o Explore issues & interventions
regarding resistance to care, aggression, wandering, restraints, etc.
o Review
and develop an understanding of state regulations for dementia units
o Explore
common complaints that contribute to the failure of a dementia unit based
on current survey findings
o Understand the importance of comprehensive dementia
care training for all staff
o Identify ways to educate and support staff,
residents, and families
Instructors: Lynn Biot-Gordon is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with a Master of Social Work degree. She is a consultant for long term care facilities which includes training and in-services on a variety of topics for residents, families, and health care staff. She is the founder of Gordon Social Work Consultants.
Sandra Stimson is a Certified Activity Director and a Certified Assisted Living Administrator. In addition to serving as an Activity Director, Assistant Administrator, and Director of Alzheimer's Units in LTC and residential facilities, she develops and implements Alzheimer's units nationwide. She runs caregiver support groups and is a health educator. She is co-founder of Pet Express Pet Therapy Program and Alternative Solutions in Long Term Care.
